Rowan International Club anyone?

If you are a member of the Rowan International Club.....I was a member years ago, let it lapse, just joined again......you'll know that you get a free gift from Rowan (Westminster Fibres) each year.

This year it's a lovely scarf pattern - actually two scarf patterns - one lace one cabled - and yarn.

On Ravelry the Rowan Knitters group have been swapping their yarn if they didn't like the shade they received....so I was anxious to see what I'd get.....beige would have been too blah, brown would have been so typical for me!, red would have been awful.......I got a lovely shade of Turquoise -- sorry, but I seem to have lost the photo....so instead....

Wht do you think of this photo? I've been playing around with Photoshop Elements....

She Ewe Knits News!

Hi there!

Big sale going on over at She Ewe Knits......old skein format Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift, new format balls of Spindrift - select shades on sale, some leftover Simply Shetland yarns, old patterns.

Yes, I'm clearing out.........She Ewe Knits will close as a yarn retailer. I've been debating this for the past year....and after 8 years of internet yarn retailing, I've decided it's time to move on. There are many reasons.....bottom line is I've decided it's time to move on to other things.

Like this....
a design, done by me, for Simply Shetland, in my favourite yarn, Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift.

The Sheeweknits.com web site will remain as a site to provide information on any patterns I may develop, to give tips and techniques (it's about time I revamped this section) and I hope in the future to host my blog there.........

Once the yarn clearance sale is over.........I'll be revamping She Ewe Knits to this new format....but first, I have to clear out some yarn!

So, drop on by to She Ewe Knits and check out the clearance pages!

Friday, September 11, 2009 - a Bucket List event!

This was a significant event for me.....after all these years of reading her books, being amazed at her colour sense, and intrigued by her life.........
I was unaware of what a serious influence Alice Starmore would be on my life when she was touring in the US.....somehow I was totally unaware at the time.....but her "Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting" was the very first serious knitting book I ever bought.

It took years to get up the courage to attempt one of her designs.....but I kept buying her books, and dreaming of the day when I'd have courage enough to attempt one. When I finally knit Grant Avenue and absolutely loved it.....my whole knitting world changed. Traditional Fair Isle, using the fine yarns became my passion - it still is!
So when I heard earlier this year that she was going to be doing workshops and presentations at the I Knit Weekender 11-12 September, 2009, I picked up the phone and ordered tickets for both her Fair Isle Workshop and her "Influences on Design" talk.

Friday, September 11, 2009 was the reason for our trip -- Let me tell you that it was well worth the trip to London!!!!

The Fair Isle workshop was an hour long -- ours ran over -- and as an experienced fair isle knitter, it was lovely just to hear her speak about the kind of knitting that continues to thrill me.
Here she is cutting the armhole steek on a child's sweater.

Her "Influences on Design" was a powerpoint presentation that covered the inspiration for her Hebridean yarn shades......and she spent a bit of time on how she works to protect the environment of the Island that she lives on. I felt that protecting her Island environment is her passion these days.......
It was a great day.....one that I will always remember....and another tick off of my "bucket list".
My apologies to Alice for posting these photos -- I hope you don't mind!

Thursday....

You know what it's like when you are waiting for a big event.........we'd been in London 3 days and had enjoyed ourselves immensely......this was our 4th day.....the day before the big day.....and although I was having a great time.....in a way I wanted to hurry up and get Thursday over with.......Note to self: Live in the Moment LOL!!!

So, Thursday am we wandered over to the Royal Horticultural Halls and Conference Centre to do a reconnoiter of the logistics. Couldn't see anything unusual - big double doors to enter....it was only a 5 minute walk from our Hotel (that was why we picked our hotel) and would be easy to get to on Friday morning -- we (er I) wanted to be there early!!!!

Then we spent the day in the area of "The Embankment" by the Thames - Westminster Abbey, walked around the Pariament Buildings. Got this great shot of "the eye" which shows you just how huge it is!Then we did some more yarn shopping at....

.......a lovely little shop about a 10 minute walk from the Angel tube station!

We had our dinner at a little Italian bistro -- freshly made pasta with Parsley picked from the plant on the serving hatch counter -- we saw the chef picking it himself!!!

Then back to the hotel to try and relax for the big day!

Covent Garden

On Wednesday, we decided to explore Covent Garden. A short tube ride and we were there. It seemed like we'd just started walking when from the corner of my eye I spotted a familiar logo.......honestly, I didn't know it was there........

A Radley store -- full of Radley bags of all shapes, sizes and colours! Of course, one had to come home with me.

Don't know what a Radley bag is? Well, here's a link to the Radley web page.

A little further on we saw a sign for the London Transport Museum......for a tour of the history of the London Transport system....from the days of horse drawn carriages - to today.

After the Transport Museum, I felt that a little yarn shop visiting was in order........

See the Radley shopping bag? While I was looking around I Knit London, DH was happy -- after having something to drink in the "I Knit" shop, he went back down the road to the Ian Allan shop just over the road and down a bit -- Ian Allan being the biggest specialist book publisher in the UK - so DH was happy checking out the railway books!

After a quick trip back to the hotel to freshen up, drop off my Radley, and put our feet up for an hour.......back to Covent Garden for dinner -- and to the theatre!

THE MOUSETRAP, by Agatha Christie

We'd seen this play in Toronto, where it ran for 25 years, closing in January 2004. Being Agatha Christie fans, we had to see "The Mousetrap" while in London, where this play has been running for 58 consecutive years! We saw the 23,663 show.

Don't ask me "who done it" - we were sworn to secrecy!

The Sights of London

We had to walk over the Millenium Bridge........have you seen the latest Harry Potter where this bridge is destroyed in the opening??????Alan, ever the engineer, had a good look at how it was constructed. Then we got our tickets for.....The London Eye -- We met a lovely couple from California who asked me to take their photo - and they took ours in return. I had to show of "The Knitter" Issue 9 which I'd picked up earlier that day in Victoria Station.
You can't believe how big this thing is -- each pod holds about 30 people and it moves so slowly -- those are the Parliament buildings at the top right of this photo.
to be continued....
